What Is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols incorporating elements from different treatment approaches.
How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy method that uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain. Therapists often use eye movements to facilitate bilateral stimulation. These eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, and this portion of sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes the recent events in the person’s life.
EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories in such a way that normal information processing is resumed. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result of relational traumas, or childhood abuse and/or neglect. What Does EMDR Help?
EMDR had been originally established as helpful for PTSD, although it’s since been proven useful for treatment in the following conditions:
- Panic Attacks
- Complicated Grief
- Dissociative Orders
- Disturbing Memories
- Phobias
- Pain Disorders
- Performance Anxiety
- Addictions
- Stress Reduction
- Sexual and/or Physical Abuse
- Body Dysmorphic Disorders
- Personality Disorders
None of the above symptoms or experiences fit you?
Do you experience distressing emotions that appear to you, and perhaps to others, to be excessive given the current situation? Do you tend to be highly reactive to certain triggers? Is there one (or more!) dysfunctional belief that you believe about yourself even though you know deep down it is not true? If so, you may still be a good candidate for EMDR therapy. At Palm Beach Holistic Counseling, we incorporate holistic practices into EMDR treatment plans, including mindfulness exercises, nutrition support, and personalized fitness recommendations. We offer a safe, supportive space for you to heal at your pace.

Q: What Is EMDR Used to Treat?
A: Although primarily associated with PTSD, EMDR is used to treat a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, phobias, and grief. It’s particularly effective for conditions tied to unresolved trauma and helps individuals build resilience and emotional well-being.
Q: Will I Cry During My EMDR Session?
A: Having a strong emotional response is completely normal. As you process traumatic memories, feelings that have been suppressed come to the surface. This is part of the healing process. While some clients cry, others may experience different emotions, such as anger, or physical sensations. Every session is unique to your experience.
Q: Is EMDR Covered by Insurance?
A: Coverage for EMDR therapy depends on your insurance provider and plan. Most policies will cover EMDR with a licensed therapist as part of standard mental health services. During your consultation, we’ll discuss options. If insurance isn’t an option for you, we also offer flexible payment arrangements.
Q: What Kind of Trauma Can EMDR Help With?
A: EMDR therapy works well for both single-event trauma and complex trauma stemming from repeated experiences. EMDR has been used to treat trauma from childhood abuse, sexual assault, combat experiences, accidents, and natural disasters. It’s also useful for processing more subtle emotional wounds, such as bullying or attachment-related issues.
Q: Who Is Not a Good Candidate for EMDR Therapy?
A: While EMDR is a powerful tool, it may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals currently experiencing severe dissociation, active substance abuse, or certain medical conditions should call 911 and may need to stabilize with other therapies first. A qualified therapist will assess whether EMDR is appropriate for your specific situation.
